Concept/Definition Map The concept/definition map is a strategy to help students relate new vocabulary words or ideas to the descriptive words and phrases that go along with them. It helps students to create a mental picture rather than to simply memorize the dictionary definition. This activity is very conducive to students working in pairs or small groups to figure out descriptors of the vocabulary word or concept. In Social Studies particularly, the ability to place vocabulary in context is helpful as new concepts often repeat themselves in future units and lessons. This strategy allows them to begin doing that right away when it asks them to create three examples; students have the opportunity use the word in context after defining it. |

Vocabulary Overview Guide The vocabulary overview guide is a strategy used as a graphic organizer to help students develop clues about word meaning based on contextual information. It helps students come to an understanding about a word rather than simply memorizing. The structure of the guide itself helps students to keep track of new words and their relevance to the overall lesson. The guide could be particularly helpful in Social Studies when studying terms that are set in historical context. If students see the word as describing the historical setting, they gain practice with both the word itself and the importance of the historical events surrounding it. |
