Author Says/I Say
The author says/I say strategy is a reading guide that helps students to work their way through a "conversation" with the author of a text. The idea is that students will make notes as they read about what the author is saying that prompts other thoughts and ideas for them as the reader. They then combine the author's ideas with their own to begin to reach a conclusion. This strategy could really be considered a comprehension strategy or an assessment strategy. For this literacy plan, I have placed it as an assessment strategy to determine student learning needs and comprehension of text. Due to the nature of social studies texts, it can be very easy for students to "skim" material and just look for important dates and names; they sometimes never understand the reason behind learning of certain events. Teachers can use this strategy to get a sense of how much true understanding of text is occurring with their students. |

KWL Chart A KWL chart is a quick formative assessment strategy that teachers can use to get a glimpse of student knowledge of a topic prior to beginning of the unit/lesson. The chart can be revisited to be used as a final assessment after the unit has been completed. It has relevance in Social Studies because there is a wide variety of what is taught to students in younger grade level, especially related to World History. A KWL chart allows teachers to adjust lesson plans based on the prior knowledge of students and this is a quick way to gain that prior knowledge. |
